Mission Statement

For the past few years, I have been focused on building my business, and helping out athletes, and Non-Profits in the action sports industry. In January of 2008, after months of being sick, and losing 50 pounds, I was diagnosed with Metastatic Colon Cancer. After a year of denial, and depression, I have emerged with spirit and inspiration. The goal of this blog page is to raise money so that I can free my time for volunteer work, and fundraising events, relieve my mother of her monthly monetary support that comes from her IRA, and raise money to achieve a few of my life's dreams. Thank you for checking out my page, and shop. I am an accomplished, honest, and caring businessman. The money from your contributions, and purchases will be used the most sensible, and efficient way possible. Best wishes, Scott Serchen

WTF! I am so sick of this.

Lately, there has been a slurry of uninsured athletes getting hurt.  It is such an issue that it has lead to the formation of the Athlete Recovery Fund, and every week there are new twitter posts, and facebook pages requesting money to pay the medical bills for these people.  Now don’t get me wrong, I wanna support the well being of these people, and the industry probably more than the next guy.  What I don’t understand is, if so and so who got injured skating was such an important and respected member of your business’s “family”, then why don’t you provide him/her with insurance.

Sponsors, you invest thousands of dollars in kids that are too old to be on their families insurance, and too young to know any better.  Brands and Team Managers, why don’t you make it your responsibility to see that your investment pays off, educate your riders about insurance, make them an appointment and get them insured.  That should be part of the sponsorship deal.

Resorts, we know your quarterly earnings, it’s public information.  Step up, and insure your seasonal employees, full time and part time.  I lived with one of your employees last year.  He got injured, and couldn’t work.  He ended up, stealing from me and the other housemates, and getting kicked out by the landlord after 2 months of not being able to pay the rent.

Parents, you gave birth to talented individuals that are trying to follow their dream in action sports.  If your kids can’t afford insurance, then insure them.

And lastly, kids, I know what I was spending money on when I was riding year round.  I spent a substantial amount of money on beer and other vices.  Definitely enough to pay monthly for insurance.  Stop spending your money on frilly pirate shirts at the thrift stores and frequent nights out at Charlies, or gambling in Vegas during SIA, and do yourself a favor get insured.

For at least some insurance XSInow.com provides affordable supplemental insurance for less than 20 a month.

I think the Athlete Recovery Fund should actually provide grants or scholarships to insure kids.  That’s a lot cheaper than paying for their injuries after the fact.

Leave of Absence.

OK, OK, I know it’s been weeks since we last saw each other, but it’s been for the best I’d like to think.  I wrapped up my Seattle trip a few days early after basically being kicked out of my friends house for letting her into my real world.  A world of confusion, depression, financial hardship, low self esteem, and the energy to do little more than nothing.  The last time I saw her, I basically didn’t express my real feeling for the very reason, I didn’t want it to affect our relationship.  So if you have a hard time dealing with whats really going on with people, don’t ask “how are you” and expect a truthful answer, or if you get one, PLEASE don’t alienate the person as it will only send them further into depression for being truthful.  If you can’t handle the truth, just listen, give them a hug, tell them you love them and leave it at that.  I really feel like I lost a friend of over 10 years.

On a higher note, I did get to surf LaPush and had a mini Mt Baker reunion.  At the coast I saw Tofe, Dave and Cindy, Maria Debari, and in West Seattle I had breakfast with Maxx Von Marbod, Marcel Dolak, Megan Bailey at Easy Street cafe, Jamie Lynn even pulled up on his hog.  I stopped at the Mervin factory where I saw Pete Saari, Stephen Cobb (board engineer), A few others, and Tim Zimmerman was in town from Portland on his way to Whistler.  So for such a short trip, it was packed with familiar faces.  I really love the Northwest.  I’ll get back there someday if it kills me.  I missed the Spacecraft show/party, but did see that Ryan Davis is coming up in the art world with graphics on this and next years Mervin boards.  Good stuff.

Medically and physically I have been feeling like total crap lately.  I am kicking the pain killers because I think they are actually the cause of the intestinal pain I am having, or the tumor is growing back faster than ever.  I have no idea.  The cramping has gone away since my efforts to get off the pills so that’s good.  It’s been replaced with the symptoms of withdrawal so that’s not so good.  I basically have no idea what’s going on with my body, and I just want to feel good.  I haven’t had the energy to do anything lately.  I’m down to 1/2 hydrocodone every 1-2 days.  I was taking 4-5 daily.

In lighter news, I have been graced with the help of Steph Nitsch in writing the proposal and press release for the Gone Til November movie premier series/B4BC benefit.  Due to my health and mental condition, I wasn’t sure I wanted to take it on this year, but after reading her words, I am very inspired to make it happen.  There are some issues with the current chosen location, so I’m trying to get up to Tahoe to scout a few others, and maybe work some shifts at Sam’s, cause I am broke.

IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO GET INVOLVED WITH THE BENEFIT, PLEASE EMAIL ME AT SCOTT@HIVEPROJECTS.NET.

I’ll post a gallery for this as soon as I find the usb cord for my camera.  Gotta clean my room, and unpack.  I haven’t done that yet.
