New Blog Column. The midnight adventures of CharlieCat!
Posted by: | CommentsSo I moved into a new place, it’s not the biggest place, a 3 bedroom, 2 bath, with an office(thank god), small kitchen, good size living room, and a carport, and a pool. I live with 3 great friends, and the house is always active. I’m the most non active one in the house. Pam is always working, Meg is working and going to school, Ross is working, hiking, climbing, or hanging with his girl Kristin who wrote this cool blog about hiking the Pacific Crest Trail. something I would like to do someday. Those are the human inhabitants of our cozy condo. NOW on to the animals. We have 2 great dogs, Shasta, a shepardy/dingo mutt thing whom I would clone in a heartbeat, Kona, a sweet Great Dane with very funny/clumsy antics, then there’s Charlie, the cat.
Now I am not usually fond of cats due to memories of horrible allergies as a child that I must have grown out of. From the day 1 of living here, I was hesitant to befriend Charlie. I am not the cat type, nor do I condone the ownership of multiple cats especially for females over 30. Needless to say Charlie has grown a bit on me. My mom swears his breed is called a Maine Coon. How can you not like the name alone. It took me a while to get used to his meowing at any given door or window, at any given hour of the morning, to get in or out, but I did. I used to ignore it, now I graciously get up and let him in or out, and when I open the door to the closet where his food is, we meow together and he rubs up against my legs to thank me. Were still feeling each other out, but getting along fine. 4 people with frequent guests, and 3 animals makes for a crowded place when were all home together which isn’t often.
One of Charlie’s habits, good or bad I haven’t decided, but noteable for sure, is bringing home gifts for us each morning to enjoy. So this is the 1st installment of my new column “The Midnight Adventures of CharlieCat”. There probably won’t be much writing after this initial introduction, mostly pictures. I will interject text where I feel it is needed. I haven’t snapped a pic of Charlie yet, but I will soon for your viewing pleasure. Here however are some pictures of his latest gift, that has been on our doorstep for a few days now. Let’s just day I wouldn’t want to be a rodent in our neighborhood! Enjoy!
- Lizard, this is about the 3rd I have seen.
- The tail
Regimen, regiment, whatever.

It’s amazing how something as simple as going to the gym can make you feel so much better mentally. I usually go a couple times a week for yoga, but after talking to my mom today( I am going to blame her for this as well), she had mentioned a rowing machine. That got me thinking. I am near the end of my 12 round cycle of chemo, and still 25-30 lbs under weight. Now that weight should be 85-95% muscle. I have a 5-6 day camping/ocean kayaking trip coming up in August. If I don’t bulk up a bit, I’m not going to be able to handle it. so I went to the gym today, for about 30 minutes, rowed 1000 meters on the machine did some curls, 1000 more meters (about 6 minutes), did some bench presses, 1000 more meters, and did some other similar machine. Showered up and went home. I cooked some food, ate some vitamins (that I haven’t taken in forever), and here I am. Mentally pretty good and stable right now. I would like to do this twice a day. It would only take about an hour, and would get me out of the house. The other benefit to this is that I get to laugh at all the meatnecks staring at themselves as they flex in the mirror, and check out all the hot girls, maybe I’ll even meet one. I did chat one up today that had a wisconsin shirt on for about 5 seconds. The very short exchange ended in a quick hi 5, because I didn;t want to appear to be prowling at the gym.
It’s amazing that just 30 minutes doing something to better yourself can alleviate most of the mental issues listed in the previous post. Lets see what an hour a day can do! Chemo tomorrow, and I sold my dining room table, and will be getting rid of a few other things on my patio that are in the way of building my kayak. I’ll be building a simple work bench out of palatte wood, and then I’ll be ready to start.
